The Perfect Day In Heidelberg

Search for a Vacation

Hi my name is Raquel and this is my travel guide to Heidleberg, Germany!

Visiting a Christmas market has been on my bucket list for some time. After experiencing a pandemic lockdown, I lead with the intention to seize the moment.

This past Christmas I finally decided to make my way to Frankfurt, Germany for the Christmas market, it was beautiful and everything I envisioned + more!

During my visit, I wanted to visit neighboring towns. Frankfurt has a typical city/modern vibe and I wanted something a little more historic and authentic. After much research I narrowed my list to a few towns and ultimately decided on Heidelberg because it seemed a little easier to reach via train.

It was the best decision I made! Heidelberg is home to a castle built in the 1300’s and the world's strongest beer. The town was beautiful and rich in history. The best part was walking across the historic bridge for breathtaking skyline views!

Here’s how to spend the perfect day in Heidelberg!

Transportation:

The train ride to Heidelberg from Frankfurt is one hour. The trains leave on time and wait for no one. Be sure to give yourself enough time to buy your ticket and bring a face mask – they are mandatory to ride the train.

Where to eat:

There are plenty of places to eat and drink. Make your way into a bakery for warm buns and fresh coffee. For lunch and dinner I recommend Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus.

A local recommended this restaurant and it was perfect! The environment was cozy with dim lighting and candles on the table. I ordered the Schnitzel with a flight of their in house beers, including their strongest beer. I had a great time here, eating, drinking and people watching.

What to do/see:

  • Heidelberg Castle
  • Heidelberger Bergbahnen
    • The Heidelberg mountain railway trolley
  • Heidelberger Tun (Giant Wine Barrel)
  • Pharmacy Museum
  • The castle’s terrace
  • Tram to Königsstuhl
  • Altstadt (Old Town)
  • Church of the Holy Spirit
  • Alte Brücke (Old Bridge)

I hope this inspires you to seek adventure outside of major cities. Taking the time to venture out made me fall in love with travel 100x more and inspired me to venture away from major cities more often!

Safe travels! - Raquel Avalos
